Pichl: Preludio Fugato and 6 Fugues for violin solo, arranged for viola

Pichl, a Czech violinist and composer, left behind an extensive compositional oeuvre that is unjustly little known today. He left not only chamber music - especially duets, trios, quartets for strings - but also 3 violin concertos.

The edition presented comprises a cycle of compositions for violin alone (transcribed for viola) beginning with an entrata, a slow introduction to an allegro fugato. This is followed by six 2-part fugues - partly energetically gripping music, partly playful - with a cheerful character - which cleverly uses the possibilities of the instrument for polyphony.
