First edition
In addition to the 15 two-part inventions, J. S. Bach also presented 15 three-part inventions – which he calls symphonies – to lovers of the Clavire. There is a fair copy by Bach of both cycles, which he made in 1723.
Of the 15 symphonies, the last does not seem very suitable for a transcription for three string instruments. Symphonies 1 to 14, on the other hand, are ideal for a string trio version.
The edition presented enables these compositions to be played with two violins (the part of the first violin can also be played by the oboe) and violoncello or violoncello. a version with violin, viola and cello. The instrumentation with the viola has the advantage that the 2. System could be taken over in the original position, while in the part of the 2. violin in a few passages a change to a higher octave became necessary for technical reasons.
Very suitable for concerts - especially in churches.
